We buy Aberdeen Angus X calves every year from a local dairy farmer. They arrive on the farm when they are around 3 weeks of age and they stay with us until they are ready to be sold as beef when they are around 2 years old.
The calves arrive and are fed on milk powder until they are 8 weeks old. We then feed them a diet of home-grown Barley and rapes seed meal, as well as Barley straw, until they are old enough to go out to graze. Our cattle graze grass and clover all summer, and are fed on silage and home-grown barley during the winter. We make silage from either whole-crop barley, Lucerne or clover/grass mixed leys.
We are very lucky to have some exceptionally dry and sandy ground on parts of the farm, so we often leave yearling cattle outside during the winter. The baby calves and animals which are close to be finished are brought inside and housed in barns with straw bedding.
